You are here ... What's Your Skin Type (Article) What's Your Skin Type Before you start any skincare regimen it is essential you know your skin type. This is not as easy as it sounds. Many of us actually have two skin types - our facial skin and the skin on the rest of our body. Skin type can also change. You may have normally oily skin but due to lifestyle changes or hormone fluctuations your skin may change. The important thing is to tailor your skincare regimen to your present skin type. Here are some tips for determining your skin type. Dry skin: Dry skin is usually caused by under or inactive oil glands that do not produce enough sebum. Sebum is what keeps the skin naturally lubricated. Dry skin feels itchy and taut and is sometimes sensitive. It is usually characterized by a dull appearance and may be flaky or scaly. Proper hydration both inside and out is important for those with dry skin. Rich skincare formulas with a well-balanced combination of oil and water will moisturize and protect the skin. Oily skin: Those with oily skin have glands that produce excess oil giving a somewhat greasy texture frequently accompanied by large pores. Oily skin types are acne prone and very common among teenagers. Hormone levels play a large role in oily skin causing the glands to become more active resulting in sebum being trapped inside the skin. Acne is the typical result. Despite these problems, however, oily skin tends to remain younger looking and more supple. Clay masks and steam treatments are beneficial for oily skin types. Sensitive skin: Sensitive skin can be dry, normal, or oily but is very delicate. Sensitive skin types usually react to environmental conditions, cosmetics containing alcohol, or synthetically manufactured ingredients and requires special treatment. Natural and gentle skincare products are the best solution. Normal skin: Normal skin is balanced skin with the oil glands producing sebum at a moderate rate - neither too oily or too dry. Normal skin appears moist and healthy. Regular cleansing, toning and moisturizing keeps it looking its best. Combination skin: Combination skin is very common with most people having at least two skin types. Frequently referred to as the "t-zone" combination skin is usually characterized by oily skin on the forehead, nose, and chin and dry or normal skin around the cheeks, eyes, and mouth. Of course, these different skin types require different treatment. |
